On October 8th, 2010, Sherri and I received a call that would forever change our lives. It was a call that instructed us to rush Sherri to the hospital right away as recent blood tests did NOT look good and required immediate investigation. I’ll be honest with you, it was a call that set our lives into a whirlwind for the next 24 – 36 months and possibility one of the most frightful calls I’ve ever received. Never underestimate what one call can do.
24 hours later my wife Sherri Strader, a healthy 21 years old, was diagnosed with a deadly leukemia (APL) that baffled friends, family and even doctors; talk about a shockwave, it was a shockwave that brought us all to our knees. How could someone so healthy, so sweet, so amazing be in a situation like this? I can recall multiple times asking God and family “Why not me?” but God knew what He was doing all the while.
According to Wikipedia, my wife’s diagnosis Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, had a 100% mortality rate in the 1970′s. Just 40 years separated modern medicine from a cure and hope for her condition.
But thanks be to God, after two years Sherri Johnson Strader is alive and well and has a mighty testimony to share with naysayers and believers alike. A deadly leukemia had NO HOLD on our God and we are here to tell that story and experience. Thanks be to God!
Were there battles along the way? Absolutely. Were there times of fear? Of course. Did we ever ask why? You better believe we did. Did we ever lose faith in Jesus Christ? Absolutely NOT! In fact, although fear raged in both of our lives on a daily-basis, we went to sleep every night knowing that He was on our side and had EVERYTHING under control. We may have not understood the “why” but we knew the “who” and that’ all that mattered.
Every year as we roll into October, I am always bombarded with thoughts, memories (both good and bad) but most of all…the spirt of praise and thanks! I am a blessed individual that God would give my wife to me yet again and show His healing power and favor to myself, my wife and everyone else around us.
Reader, never forget what God has performed in your life and NEVER doubt that He’s in control of your situation if you’ll let Him. Though the storm rages, though the clouds look dark and often scary, I’m here to testify that He’ll never leave you or forsake you long as He’s captain of the vessel.
God, Thank you so much for all that you’ve done for me. You’ve blessed me beyond measure and to you and you alone do I praise and give the glory. You’re my healer, deliver and comforter.
